Athelstan is a three-form entry primary school, set in extensive grounds. As well as having multiple playgrounds and a huge playing field, we also have a number of stunning outdoor learning areas, including the Enchanted Garden and Creation Station, where pupils are able to take part in ’Forest School’ activities. There is also the Creature Feature and Butterfly Garden area to inspire and engage our pupils in the natural world.
Our pride and joy is ‘Buster’, a retired double decker London bus, who sits in the playground, having been lovingly converted into a library for our pupils to enjoy.
Athelstan is proud to have achieved a number of quality marks, including the Primary Science Gilt Mark, the Green Flag Eco-Schools' Award with Distinction, the Primary Geography Silver Mark, the Platinum Sports’ Mark and the Silver Arts’ Mark, which all recognise the high quality of our provision across the curriculum.
For many years until the accolade stopped being awarded last year, we were a Read Write Inc Model School; we were also granted Achievement for All Lead School status, the only school of this type in the Yorkshire and Humberside region.
